Japan Adventures – Day 4: Universal Studios Japan (USJ)

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) was the highlight of our trip, and we strategically chose a midweek Tuesday, hoping for fewer crowds. Yet, we didn’t account for the Obon holidays, which meant the park was bustling. On the bright side, the park hours were extended from 8 AM to 10 PM.

Morning: Arrival and Entry

We started our day with a quick breakfast from a convenience store before heading to USJ. We arrived slightly after 8:30 AM, and the entry process was seamless with minimal lines. During the security check, we were informed that we couldn’t bring food into the park. Fortunately, they didn’t ask us to discard it but simply advised us not to consume it inside.

Securing Our Spot at Super Nintendo World (SNW)

Without an Express Pass, our first task was to secure an Area Time Entry Ticket for Super Nintendo World (SNW) via the USJ app. We were lucky to get a 6:10 PM slot, ticking off the main reason for our visit.

Minion Park: A Dream Come True

Next, we headed to Minion Park, fulfilling my eldest daughter’s dream. We were fortunate to meet the Minions characters while queuing for Delicious Me! The Cookie Kitchen, allowing her to take a photo with a life-size Minion.

Brunch at Happiness Cafe®

Having skipped breakfast, we opted for brunch at Happiness Cafe® after enjoying the Freeze Ray Sliders ride. The café offered set meals based on the Minion theme, which was a hit with the kids.

Afternoon: 3D/4D Rides and Shows

Throughout the day, we focused on 3D/4D rides and shops. Despite the long lines, often exceeding 90 minutes, we managed to experience:

  • Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem
  • SING on Tour
  • Detective Conan 4-D Live Show: Jewel Under the Starry Sky

Evening: Super Nintendo World (SNW)

As our SNW slot approached, we headed over and were allowed in a few minutes early. Inside SNW, we participated in the Power-Up Band™ Key Challenges. Although the Power-Up Band cost a hefty ¥4900, it was worth it for the experience. Due to the long lines, we didn’t have enough time to finish all the challenges. Instead, we opted for one last ride – Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge™. After the ride, we had just enough time to browse the shop and buy some last-minute souvenirs, which we hadn’t had time to buy earlier.

Conclusion

Despite the unexpected holiday crowds, our day at Universal Studios Japan was filled with memorable experiences and joy. From meeting Minions to exploring Super Nintendo World, it was a day well spent.
