Visiting Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) with Kids – Bangkok Family Guide 2025

🛕 Why We Visited

Wat Arun is one of Bangkok’s most famous temples. It stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The temple is known for its tall spires and detailed design. After exploring Wat Pho, we crossed the river to visit this beautiful landmark. It’s a great spot for families, with open spaces, river views, and lots to see.

💸 Entrance Fee and What’s Included

Tickets must be bought at the entrance, and cash only is accepted.

  • ฿200 per adult
  • Small children enter free. There’s no official sign. It seems to follow the same guideline as the Grand Palace. Children under 120 cm are not charged there.

You’ll receive a free bottle of water with your ticket, which is helpful in the heat.

📸 Thai Costume Touts – What to Expect

Outside the temple, you’ll see people offering Thai costume rentals and photo packages. They’ll invite you to dress up and pose in front of the temple. Some are friendly, others can be persistent. If you’re not interested, just smile and say no.

If you do want photos, agree on the price first. The costumes are colourful and the photos can be fun, but it’s not needed to enjoy the visit.

🏯 What to See

Wat Arun’s main feature is the central prang (tower), which rises high above the river. You can climb part of it for views across Bangkok. The temple grounds also include:

  • Small gardens
  • Statues and smaller towers
  • Quiet areas to rest

The walls are decorated with porcelain and seashells, which sparkle in the sun. It looks very different from other temples in the city.

👟 Dress Code and Shoes

As with all temples in Thailand, you must dress respectfully. Shoulders and knees must be covered. No sleeveless tops, shorts, or ripped clothes.

You’ll also need to remove your shoes before entering some buildings. We wore sandals, which made it easier.

🚗 How to Get There

Wat Arun is best reached by boat. If you’re coming from Wat Pho or the Grand Palace:

  • Walk to Tha Tian Pier
  • Take the cross-river ferry – it costs just a few baht
  • Arrive directly at Wat Arun’s pier

You can also take a taxi or tuk-tuk, but the boat is quicker and more scenic.

💬 Final Thoughts

Wat Arun is a must-see in Bangkok. It’s easy to reach, affordable, and full of history. The free water was a nice touch, and the views from the tower were stunning. Just be ready for the costume touts and bring cash for entry.
