Morning: A Scenic Journey to Nara
Our adventure began with a quick breakfast from a convenient stall before we hopped on the Kintetsu-Nara Line. This line is the best choice for reaching Nara Deer Park as it’s closer than the JR Line.
Exploring Nara Deer Park
Upon arriving in Nara, we were greeted by the friendly deer that roam freely in the park. Feeding these gentle creatures was a delightful experience. We found that the best time to interact with the deer is in the morning when they are more eager for food. Our kids had a blast feeding them and watching their playful antics.
On our way back through the park in the late afternoon, the kids wanted to feed the deer again. But, by this time, the deer seemed full and uninterested in the food we offered. It was a stark contrast to their morning enthusiasm, so we recommend feeding them earlier in the day for the best experience.
Todai-ji Daibutsuden: A Step Towards Enlightenment
Inside the Great Buddha Hall, we encountered a unique pillar with a small hole at its base. This hole is believed to be the size of the Daibutsu’s (Big Buddha’s) nostril. According to legend, squeezing through this hole grants enlightenment in the next life. Our kids bravely attempted it, while we watched many others successfully make their way through. Be prepared for a long queue if you decide to try it yourself!
Lunch and Shopping at Higashimuki Shopping Street
After our spiritual journey, we headed back to Higashimuki Shopping Street, conveniently located next to the Kintetsu-Nara Line station, for a delicious lunch. We made sure to visit Nakatanidou, a renowned Japanese sweet shop famous for its mochi-pounding demonstrations. This popular attraction draws many visitors eager to film the process, so be ready to wait if you want to capture it yourself.
We continued our exploration at Mochiidono Shopping Arcade, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and unique shops.
Evening: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and Tempozan Ferris Wheel
Our next destination was the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. It’s essential to pre-book your entrance tickets, especially during the busy season. We arrived late and secured an entrance time for 6:30 PM. Unfortunately, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Osaka was about to close, so we couldn’t visit it.
With some time to spare, we explored Tempozan Market Place, the mall next to the aquarium. We considered riding the Tempozan Ferris Wheel but decided to do that after our aquarium visit. This turned out to be a great decision, as the Ferris Wheel’s night-time light show is truly spectacular.
Night: A Mesmerizing Aquarium Visit
Our visit to the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan was fascinating. We timed it perfectly, finishing our tour just as night fell, allowing us to enjoy the colourful lighting on the Ferris Wheel. It was a beautiful end to an amazing day.
